Honduras Weekly Sponsors Monthly Writing Contest

alt

It is cliché to say that the youth of a country represent its future and its hope. But it's true. And it is especially true in Honduras, where approximately 45 percent of its population of more than 7.2 million is under 15 years of age. President Porfirio Lobo has emphasized education as one of the central elements of his plan for governing Honduras over the next four years. He wants as many Honduran students as possible to learn English and to master computer skills that will allow them to keep up with and surpass students from any country. He sees this as the basis for Honduras having well-informed and wise leaders and a better trained workforce in the future.

Honduras Weekly wishes to play a role in helping stimulate the enthusiasm of Honduran youth for learning English and becoming adept at computer programs and the Internet which is why we have created a "Youth" section. Our idea for this section is that it be written and edited by the youth of Honduras. We want to establish relationships with every school in Honduras that teaches English and has access to the Internet, and encourage teachers to use Honduras Weekly as a teaching tool for current events, but also for creative and investigative writing.

Honduras Weekly is accepting articles, essays, and stories on any topic. Our youth editors review all submissions and select some of them for publication. Every month, they pick one piece for special recognition, based on writing excellence and originality, and the author receives a cash award of Lps 500 from Honduras Weekly. Writers and teachers, send us your work at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . (7/1/10) (graphic courtesy Internet, quote by Cynthia Ozick)

I will get this to our teachers at CBS immediately. I only have one suggestion regarding instructions for the judges; Please make the ability to convey their ideas understandably in English more important than being able to put them all in grammatically correct English sentences.
