The Ministry of Tourism under its new minister, Nelly Jerez, is preparing to launch a major publicity campaign to promote travel and tourism within Honduras. For the effort, which is timed with the upcoming Holy Week holiday, the Ministry has adopted the slogan, "Honduras is our home". The idea is to inspire Hondurans to depart from their routines and go out to explore their country and discover or re-discover its rich cultural heritage and natural beauties -- everything from Honduras' colorful colonial towns and ancient Maya ruins to its pristine beaches and lush mountain forests. The plan is good, however as an economy-wise measure it is better to put our efforts in promoting outside the country to attract foreign currencies into our economy, specially when there is not much budget available.

Promoting internal tourism contributes to our own citizen's culture, awareness, and national pride, but from the economic point of view and a country-wide perspective it is like passing money from one pocket to the other. This would more likely be a task for the Ministry of Culture.
