Roatán And About: Rebuilding the Tourist Trade

PDF Print E-mail

alt By Don Pearly
The fact that Roatán is a relatively short non-stop destination where tourists can experience a combination of Caribbean and Latin food, music and entertainment has somehow not been enough. Yes, tourism is down just about the same percentage as it is for Hawaii. Now I guess that puts us right up there with the big guys, but it still hurts. The Minister of Tourism, The Honorable Ricardo Martinez won himself a bit of negative publicity when he made a public announcement stating tourists should not come to Honduras. He did that right in the middle of the Mel Scandal, and although he was technically right, as there was some civil unrest, and what was coming next was unknown, the press thought his comments out of line.

I know Minister Martinez personally, and have for years and years, and always found him to put Honduras tourism first. Every meeting I attended, he attended and probably chaired, and when he achieved the position of Minister we knew things would get better. The untimely Mel situation threw us all a big bad curve right in the middle of the world-wide wind-down of vacation travel due to the financial problems the United States was experiencing.

But now that the States are starting to wake up and crave the sunshine again, we can all do our part and play mini-ministers of tourism by getting our friends and family to pay the island a visit. We cannot rely on the cruise ship people alone, although they are growing in numbers daily. We love that airplane/airport traffic that gives the visitors enough time to fall in love with our beautiful rock. Once they are hooked because of the wonderful food and activities at places like The Bay Island Beach Resort, and after shopping in our many shops such as Yabba Ding Ding and the brand new mall, they will contact one of the very professional real estate sales organizations such as Century 21 or Remax, well known brands familiar to all American travelers.

Next step, they purchase some land and sooner or later build a vacation or retirement home for themselves and their families. Then it is back to business as usual and the island economy again becomes the talk of the universe.

How About a Little Old Fashion Humor?
A blonde was shopping at Target and came across a shiny silver thermos. She was quite fascinated by it, so she picked it up and took it to the clerk to ask what it was...

The clerk said, 'Why, that's a thermos..... it keeps hot things hot, and cold things cold.'

'Wow, said the blonde, 'that's amazing.....I'm going to buy it!' So she bought the thermos and took it to work the next day.

Her boss saw it on her desk. 'What's that,' he asked?

'Why, that's a thermos..... it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold,' she replied...

Her boss inquired, 'What do you have in it?'

The blond replied... 'Two popsicles and some coffee.'

And Last But Not Least
A blonde goes into work one morning crying her eyes out. Her boss asked sympathetically, 'What's the matter?'

The blonde replies, 'Early this morning I got a phone call saying that my mother had passed away.'

The boss, feeling sorry for her, says, 'Why don't you go home for the day? Take the day off to relax and rest.'

'Thanks, but I'd be better off here. I need to keep my mind off it and I have the best chance of doing that here.'

The boss agrees and allows the blonde to work as usual. A couple of hours pass and the boss decides to check on the blonde. He looks out from his office and sees the blonde crying hysterically.

'What's so bad now? Are you gonna be okay?' he asks.

'No!' exclaims the blonde. 'I just received a horrible call from my sister. Her mother died, too!'

How About a Little Gratitude
Let’s stop and thank God that Roatán does not suffer from major earthquakes. Our sympathy goes out to Haiti. (1/14/10) (photo courtesy Internet)

Ricardo Martinez didn't simply suggest it was a bad time to visit Honduras, He actually showed video of riots in Tegus and told reporters peace could never be restored until Mel Zelaya was reinstated.
