Lobo Willing to Listen to Resistance Demands

President Porfirio Lobo last week stated that he is willing to meet with leaders of the "Resistance" movement in Honduras who propose the establishment of a National Constituent Assembly -- the so-called Constituyente -- to more fully understand what it is that they want to achieve. "I want to sit down with them and let them tell me what reforms [to the Constitution] they wish to make, and then open it up for consideration by the population, but I think that talking about a Constituyente for the purposes of allowing for [presidential] re-election should have minimal priority" said Mr. Lobo. He stressed his opposition to any changes to the Constitution that would allow for re-election and reiterated that he will govern Honduras for four years, and not one day more. Mr. Lobo also reiterated his opposition to the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), from which Honduras recently withdrew. He noted, "I will not be part of an organization that goes against the United States because it is not in the best interests of Honduras." The Resistance strongly backs Honduras' continued membership in ALBA. (photo of Porfirio Lobo courtesy Internet)
