Dominican Deal Wins Dignity for Zelaya
Last Updated on Thursday, 21 January 2010 09:12
Deposed president Manuel Zelaya welcomed the deal signed Wednesday that will grant him safe passage to travel to the Dominican Republic as a "distinguished guest". He stated that the document signed by President-elect Porfirio Lobo and Dominican President Leonel Fernández recognizes that he is still the president of Honduras. "[The signing of this agreement] permits me to maintain my dignity and my presidency until January 27" said Mr. Zelaya. "It reiterates my commitment to defending with dignity the mandate that I was given." Mr. Zelaya observed that the gesture by Mr. Lobo is a first step toward achieving unity and national reconciliation in Honduras. "Honduras must be willing to take up the dialogue again and show respect for democracy, which was broken by the de facto government." (photo of Manuel Zelaya courtesy Internet)
