Zelaya Urges Non-Cooperation With Truth Commission
Tuesday, 08 June 2010 15:00
Former president Manuel Zelaya today urged former officials of his administration not to cooperate with the Truth and National Reconciliation Commission established on May 4 to investigate both the events that led up to the ousting of Mr. Zelaya as president on June 28, 2009 and those that followed. In a communiqué released in Tegucigalpa, Mr. Zelaya, who remains in self-exile in the Dominican Republic, stated, "In the name of the government of the people over which I had the honor to preside, I publicly call on no official to collaborate with this commission until it conforms to the priorities and requirements consistent with a genuine and impartial Truth Commission." He noted that any information offered in interviews with members of the commisson could be used to support the conclusions of the commission and thus help exonerate those responsible for his overthrow. The five-member commission, led by former vice-president of Guatemala Eduardo Stein, plans to submit a final report by January 2011. (6/8/10) (photo of Manuel Zelaya courtesy Internet)
