US Will Restart Economic Aid to Honduras
Last Updated on Tuesday, 09 February 2010 15:27
United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton yesterday spoke by telephone with President Porfirio Lobo to say that she recognized the efforts he is undertaking to "promote the integration and unity of Honduran society" and reassure him of her intention to "reactivate assistance [to Honduras] to strengthen social development programs in the country". The US government suspended more than US$30 million in non-humanitarian aid to Honduras following the overthrow of Manuel Zelaya as president on June 28, 2009. The suspension was part of a broader US$450 million aid freeze by the international community, including the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), the European Union (EU), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, and Venezuela. The US officially normalized diplomatic ties with Honduras on January 29. (photo of Hillary Clinton courtesy Getty Images)
