Mexico Unaware of Zelaya Residency Plans

PDF Print E-mail

alt Manuel Zelaya has been living in exile in the Dominican Republic since January 27. The deposed president's sojourn as a "Distinguished Guest" in the capital city of Santo Domingo has been characterized as "temporary" by Mr. Zelaya himself and his close advisers. Mr. Zelaya's near-term plans are reportedly to live in Mexico. On Monday, however, Mexico's Minister of Foreign Relations, Patricia Espinosa, said that the Mexican government was unaware of Mr. Zelaya's intentions. She noted, "[Mr. Zelaya] has not submitted a formal request [for residency], so the truth is that we do not know. He has changed his plans a lot." During the past week, Mr. Zelaya has announced repeatedly that he plans to return to Honduras sooner rather than later, but that the "conditions are not right" at the moment. Mr. Zelaya has called on President Porfirio Lobo to purge the institutions that backed his overthrow on June 28, 2009. He currently faces a series of criminal charges from the Attorney General and Public Ministry in Honduras and would face arrest were he to return to the country.
