Honduras Awaits US Approval for Ambassador in Washington

PDF Print E-mail

alt Foreign Minister Mario Canahuati announced Wednesday that the Lobo administration has selected the person it would like to serve as its ambassador to the United States. The name is being withheld pending US State Department approval for the nomination. As with all ambassadorial appointments, the Foreign Ministry must submit a formal request to the host nation. There is speculation that career diplomat Roberto Flores Bermúdez is favored for the post. Mr. Flores has previously served twice as Honduras' ambassador to the US. He is a member of the opposition Liberal Party, and so his appointment would fulfill both Honduras' need for an experienced diplomat with a network of contacts in Washington, DC and be consistent with efforts by President Porfirio Lobo to build a unity government made up of members of all political parties in key positions. The process of re-establishing diplomatic relations with countries around the world has accelerated this week, with the naming of Honduras' ambassadors to Germany, Guatemala, and Italy and the arrival in Tegucigalpa of Spain's ambassador to Honduras, Ignacio Rupérez Rubio, and France's ambassador, Laurent Dominati.
